Sashiko is a Japanese mending and embroidery technique that embodies sustainability in practice. Although it has evolved in Japan from a simple repair method into a complex pattern-making technique, this hands-on workshop isn’t about technical perfection, but about the joy of mending things yourself. Bring along any clothes or textiles that you’re particularly fond of and that need mending. With simple techniques and a brilliant idea, these can be transformed into a new favourite item. Together, we’ll rescue cherished pieces – or at the very least, come up with a plan for how to rescue them. All stitches are done by hand. No prior experience of sewing or embroidery is required, materials are provided. Together with artist and researcher Karin Altmann, I will host these workshops as part of this year’s re:pair festival.
